Description:
Small, sociable crow with moderately long tail somewhat rounded at tip. Adult has silky-grey nape and hind neck, whitish half-collar, slate-grey underparts, and pale grey iris. Juvenile has darker grey nape and hind neck, and darker grey iris. In flight looks blunt-headed with oval-shaped wings and comparatively long tail.
Distribution:
Uncommon winter visitor to lower valleys of Gilgit and Diamer districts. Inhabits great variety of open country, preferably with scattered trees. Favors mixed farmland, gardens, orchards and wooded steppe, non-breeding reported up to 3000m.
Behavior:
Feeds chiefly on the ground, walking with bold, strutting gait, as it searches for insects; side-hops to catch prey items. Omnivorous, but less of a carnivorous scavenger than most congeners. Sometime diet mainly plant materials, including grain, seeds and berries, but primarily carnivorous during breeding season. Normal summer diet includes wide variety of invertebrates.
